It's an absolute rollercoaster of a lifestyle to choose mate. Forget the dosh element (or lack of it, lol), the emotional ups 'n' downs & physical challenges are insane. The rewards are even more mind boggling 😉

That's very kind of you thanks CM. It's still very much of a learning curve for me. I find them the most fascinating of all species, not only in Thailand, but including everywhere I've been lucky enough to fish. Since introducing them into our lake (about 8 Rai) they've been a real challenge to catch on lures. A large part of that is I'm relatively new to lure fishing. I don't really like using livebaits, but they definitely seem to have a preference for them. Maybe it is because our lake is deep, usually quite coloured & limited growth in the margins? They mainly hit 1-2lb prey (asian silver carp, Catlas & Java barbs) out in open water. I thought they may struggle feeding but wow! What I have noticed though is that their fry get obliterated even with both parents taking care. We have a few Chao Phraya catfish (not huge) , hampala barbs & another few species that seem to get the better of them.

@@ToonLeighporpeangfarmThailand Hampala barbs are very fond of Snakehead eggs and fry as well as the Chao praya catfish and Hampala barbs in the wild, are the only predator that controls or reduce the Giant Snakehead population buly chopping on eggs or fry. Regarding lure fishing, I assume they would attack any top water lure if in the territorial mood or feeding mood but because they also have an easy food source, they may become less aggressive towards lures. We usually catch them when they come up on the surface to breath. They defenatly would be more aggresvie is they had a zone that they would consider their territory by adding some vegetation on the banks where they would ambush bait fish. @@ChadoMasterFishing cheers CM. There's definitely one area that two of them seem to be hanging out & hitting bait that swims near enough. Now the rains have finally arrived, the lakes margins are beginning to get covered again. They're always spoiled for ambush areas to choose from in the rainy seasons. Meeting up for a beer sounds great. Unfortunately, it's almost an impossible task leaving the farm & our 50+ goats. If you're ever on your travels near to Kamphaeng Phet & fancy some free predator fishing and a cold beers just give us a shout.

Biggest we've managed to catch is only about 2lbs but have seen an old Thai lady catch a 4/5 pounder!

Thanks Krabi. There's only one King Cobra been spotted during our 7 years on the farm. The rest have been these black and creamy white spitting Cobras.

Nice one thanks Eddie. I've thinking a bit about Tangmo after this happened. I remember you talking to us about how she goes nuts when she sees snakes. It's a huge concern with so many Cobras recently. I can see Tangmo living out her retirement in luxury full-time in your air-conditioned bedroom.

That rings so true to me Richard. It wasn't so long ago we felt like we were finally flying along after an initial turbulent few years on the farm. So far, 2024 has felt a bit like we're back in the trenches. Like you say though, things nearly always turn round for the better & we feel blessed once more.

Thanks Andrew. Like Bambi, we only have fond memories of Spoon to look back on. Unfortunately, Toon is still crook. It's going to be a long healing process ahead for her. It's never easy for someone who's normally so strong and active to be off their feet. She'll be back for sure.

Do you know what?...We've never seen anyone set snake traps in all our years out here. Apart from Na Lur, we don't even know anyone who eats them. It's strange because Toon's dad used to hang up dead ones out by the road years gone by. Locals would always take them. I blame too much KFC and McDonald's these days.

Since this has happened we now realize how common this is. BeBo is about the same size your Whiskey would have been & is very protective. Fortunately, she's easy to pick up & put her in her cage, but there may come a time, again, when I'm not there quick enough.

Thank you Chris. Sorry to hear about your recent loss also. It's been a surprise to hear from so many others how common this sort of thing is. Regarding Toon, she's going to be out of action for quite some time. I'll cope, but it's much harder for her. Thankfully, she's made of the right stuff & will be back firing on all cylinders in the future.

Thanks for that John. The focus is well & truly trying to get Toon back on her feet. We'll catch up with everything on the farm once she's firing on all cylinders again.

Many can & do but alas there's lots of variables. The species of snake, age & experience of the dog. The terrain also plays a part. A snake in the open is much easier for a dog to take on than when it's cornered.

Cheers mate. Toon is on the long road back to recovery, we've just got to be patient. We'll restart our BSF as & when the times right 😉

We heard the same thing so got a few geese to watch over our ducks. Two Burmese & one reticulated python ate our geese lol.

Spoon's last snake ended up being her biggest. Toon & I thought a while back this would eventually happen. She just wouldn't ever back down.
